heparin resistance during and post-intravenous nitroglycerin infusion
Authors
abstract
nitroglycerin has been reported to reduce activated partial thromboplastin time (aptt) values in patients treated with concurrent heparin and nitroglycerin. however, studies have yielded conflicting results. to determine whether intravenous nitroglycerin alters the anticoagulant effect of heparin, we prospectively evaluated twenty patients admitted for coronary angioplasty by measuring their aptt both before initiation and after addition of nitroglycerin to heparin therapy. the results showed that the mean of aptt at the baseline when patients were on heparin alone was not significantly different from aptt measured upon addition of nitroglycerin, and 30 min following the cessation of nitroglycerin infusion, when patients were still on the same dose of heparin. therefore, no direct effect of nitroglycerin on the anticoagulant effect of heparin was observed in this study. keywords: heparin; nitroglycerin; resistance. received: april 5, 2005; accepted: may 29, 2005

We assessed the concentration of nitroglycerin (GTN) measured in plasma at different sampling sites in the circulation during a constant i.v. infusion. Twenty patients with chronic congestive cardiac failure underwent hemodynamic monitoring during i.v. GTN infusion. Our end point was a reduction in pulmonary capillary wedge pressure by at least 25% of its control value or a 10-fold increment ov...

ing or cannulation of the ascending aorta bear a stroke risk of more than 8% in octogenarians and may have been the cause for emboli. However, we cannot rule out that air provided by the blower mister device entered the aorta through a leak between the proximal seal and the aortic wall and caused the emboli. The possibility of such a mechanism was proven in an animal experiment. This should be ...

This study was performed to determine whether nitroglycerin (NG) can increase collateral flow to ischemic myocardium and reduce ultimate infarct size. Permanent occlusion of the mid-circumflex coronary artery was produced in 43 previously instrumented conscious dogs and within 3 minutes, 6-hour intravenous infusions were begun of saline (controls, n = 18), NG in doses to reduce mean arterial pr...

Nitroglycerin, long known as a safe and effective dilator of the large coronary arteries, has recently been shown to dilate the basilar artery of the dog after experimentally induced vasospasm. In this study we have evaluated the effects of intravenous nitroglycerin on local cerebral blood flow (H2 clearance technique) and intracranial pressure (intracisternal needle monitor) in normal beagle d...
